Mathys, in Bern (Schweiz) geboren, studierte in Bern Theologie, wo er 1983 mit einer Arbeit uber das alttestamentliche Gebot der Nachstenliebe promoviert wurde. Von 1983 bis 1985 war er als Pfarrer in Saignelegier tatig. Es folgten Studienaufenthalte in Gottingen und Jerusalem sowie dreieinhalb Jahre Pfarrdienst in der reformierten Gemeinde von Pruntrut. Er habilitierte sich 1989/90 an der Evangelisch-theologischen Fakultat der Universitat Bern, wurde 1991 auf eine Professur an der Theologischen Fakultat der Universitat Heiedelberg berufen und ist seit drei Jahren Ordinarius fur Altes Testament in Basel.
