About this Item

First American Edition. Pages 298 pp. + extensive undated publisher's catalogue. Brown embossed publisher's cloth with spine illustrated and lettered in gilt. Pale yellow end papers. T.e.g. First American Edition. Peterson's Uniform Duodecimo Edition of the Complete Works of Charles Dickens. Podeschi (Gimbel) D26 (for this series, not including this volume). Eckel, pp. 180Ð186. Peterson was an early publisher of Dickens' writings and provided the first sets of his Collected (to date) Works. This collection is the first issue in America, in book form, of these stories from "Household Words" from the previous decade. The publisher's catalogue is of great interest. Among the offerings are a series of song books by Christy and Wood for the Ethiopian Minstrels, an illustrated ad for "Life in the South, a companion to Uncle Tom's Cabin," the writings of Sam Slick (Judge Haliburton), many cook books, Dickens' Works in various formats, etc. The latest work of Dickens for which an ad appears is "Little Dorrit," originally published in 1857. The ad for Peterson's Magazine offers several changes up-coming "in 1860." Wear at and chips from ends of spine. Front hinge starting externally. Corners worn and bumped. Owner's signature on front end paper: "R. Lixow." Penciled inscription on front paste down: "Charles Lixow / from his father." Minimal foxing. Else, a Very Good copy of a very fragile item.
