A early edition of this heavily illustrated dictionary on building compiled by architect and art critic Russel Sturgis. An early edition of this heavily illustrated dictionary of building compiled by American architect and art critic, Russel Sturgis. Sturgis was a disciple of John Ruskin, and was one of the founders of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Ex-libris bookplate to the front pastedown of all three volumes. This set previously belonged to the Paul Pratt Memorial Library in Cohasset, Massachusetts. From the library of Doctor Malcolm Higgs, an important architectural historian who worked as an assistant architect to Stirling & Gowan, working on their particularly renowned Leicester University Engineering Laboratory. During his long career he taught at the University of Edinburgh School of Architecture, Canterbury School of Architecture, and University of Nottingham. Later in his life he was the Vice-President and Honorary Librarian of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and contributed and edited the "Journal of Architecture". In the publisher's original cloth binding with decorative boards. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the spine. Volume I is lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine. The latter two volumes are a little more bumped, and the cloth is starting to fray to the head and tail of the spine to volume III. The front hinge of volumes II and III are starting, and are a little tender, the rear hinges of both volumes are also starting, but are firm. Internally, generally firmly bound, with bright and clean pages throughout. Good. Seller Inventory # 856N30
