A Dictionary of Days

This handy reference reveals how diverse special days received their names, with more than eight hundred entries explicating well-known, as well as obscure, named days referred to in English-speaking countries

This very entertaining, informative book is divided into two parts: the dictionary of over 800 entries; then a calendar of named days. It is intended to fill the need for a reader's guide to named days, with entries drawn from 27 categories: political, folkloric, ethnic, literary, etc., with a substantial number from religious feasts and holy days. The unusual and curious, such as Pig Face Sunday and Dipping Day, will attract the browser, yet the dictionary also serves general readers and students who need to identify Boxing Day, Yom Kippur, or a reference from Shakespeare. A popular ready-reference tool for librarians, and a welcome addition to any general reference collection. Stephen H. Cape, Indiana Univ. Lib., Bloomington
