A fine and clean copy without the usual foxing, complete with the often lacking "Chronological Table." This copy of the author's great Dictionary is signed by the previous owner, Lorraine Andrews, a direct descendent of the author. "One of the fundamental books on Hawaii. This is the first full-scale dictionary of the Hawaiian language and the basis of all subsequent dictionaries. It had its inception in Lorrin Andrews' Vocabulary of the Hawaiian Language (Lahainaluna, 1836]. That work contained, by Andrews' estimate, about 6,000 words, whereas this dictionary was estimated by him to contain about 15,000 words. copies are known that lack the vocabulary and chronological table at the end" (Forbes). The Argonaut was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America and has been a member in good standing ever since. The Shop is now located just three blocks from Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is open six days a week. Parking facilities include ample street space and a parking garage close by. The bookstore occupies one large room open to the public. One will find antique bookcases filled with fine and rare books, mostly dealing with the history of California and the American West. One will also find fine press books and other rare subject matter. The shop also carried good books in varied subject areas including art, maritime, American civil war, books on antiques, literature, regional Americana, etc..
