About the The book is the product of extensive study of Pali history and literature in the context of Pali Dictionary of Names. In this connection, the author may point out one of the greatest needs of Pali scholarship is Dictionary of names. It will be an indispensable supplement to the Word Dictionary. Having discussed all the finer points with the concerned authorities in regard to this lengthy task, he was enabled to give himself greater freedom on the selection of the materials. The work in its present form includes, besides other materials, information obtained from the whole of the Tipitaka and all the commentaries thereon. There was also the difficulty of obtaining satisfactorily uniform editions of the Tikas. The author has deliberately avoided mention of Buddhist Sanskrit Texts as it is served to get the great mass of information. The subject of the book is very delicate and informative and immensely beneficial for the researchers, historians, analyst and readers. About the Gunapala Piyasena Malalasekera was a Sri Lankan academic, scholar and diplomat best known for his Malalasekara English-Sinhala Dictionary. He was the Ceylon's first Ambassador to the Soviet Union, Ceylon's High Commissioner to Canada, the United Kingdom and Ceylon's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. He was the Professor Emeritus in Pali and Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies. Coming under the influence of Buddhist renaissance of Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala, he changed his foreign names of George and Pieris to those of Gunapala Piyasena and henceforth came to be known as G.
