I Did. I Had Help.: Dad, His Son, and AI

A father. His son. A changing world. And a question neither expected to be so difficult.

When Owen uses artificial intelligence to help with his homework, his father finds himself confronting a question that once seemed simple: What does it really mean to do your own work?

Owen isn't looking for shortcuts. He's curious, thoughtful, and discovering new ways to understand the world. But when another student's misuse of AI creates a classroom controversy, everyone pays the price-including the boy who followed the rules.

For Dad, the challenge isn't simply understanding a new technology. It's learning when to guide, when to question, and when to recognize that his son may already understand something the adults are struggling to see.

What begins as an ordinary conversation at the kitchen table becomes something much larger: a journey through questions of fairness, trust, responsibility, and what it means to learn in a world where answers are increasingly easy to find.

Warm, thoughtful, and deeply human, I Did. I Had Help. is a novel about fatherhood, growing up, and the unexpected ways parents and children teach one another.

Because getting help and doing the work aren't necessarily opposites.
