Hugh of St. Victor (1096?-1141) is the prototype, the true twelfth-century Renaissance Man, albeit one who sought to lend coherence to insatiability and diversification. The means are clear: ''The things by which every man advances in knowledge are principally two -- namely, reading and meditation.
