The Didjeridu, A Newcomers Guide, Play and Enjoy

I remember being twelve years old. My mother wanted me to learn the violin. I studied, or should I say, struggled for five years. I think that after that my mother realised I really didn't want to play the violin although I must say that I regret it now. My next musical adventure was Flamenco guitar - that was in 1968. Two years later found me in Spain playing in a dimly lit smoke filled tavern with Flamenco singers and dancers and 'el cheapo' Spanish plonk. My guitar playing took me through Europe and the U.K. and then it was back to Australia a year later. In the meantime I had built a yacht and set sail from Brisbane in 1975 heading north for Cairns. I met a lot of buskers in my travels. One of them, whom I met in Townsville, played the bagpipes (that was gong to be my next instrument or so I thought). In Cairns during 1986 I met and befriended a musician who played the didjeridu. He was to become my teacher. I usually carry my didjeridu around with me and this instrument was and still is the object of many questions. I had gained so much knowledge from my own general experiences whilst learning to play, that this booklet is the result. My next instrument will definitely be the bagpipes.
