Digital Satellites Decoded

Right now, hundreds of satellites are passing overhead—transmitting not voices, but data. Telemetry streams, digital images, IoT packets, and experimental protocols pour through the sky in formats most operators never learned to hear. While traditional ham radio still reaches for the ionosphere, a quiet revolution has already happened in orbit. The satellites speaking today are digital, software-defined, and increasingly sophisticated. The operators who understand them are building the future of amateur space communications. Everyone else is listening to static.
This is the book that bridges the gap.
Digital Satellites Decoded is the definitive technical guide for amateur radio operators, satellite enthusiasts, and communications engineers ready to master the digital systems transforming the amateur satellite service. Written with the depth of a professional reference and the clarity of patient instruction, it takes you from foundational concepts to operational mastery across nine comprehensive chapters.
You will learn how software-defined radio dismantles the limitations of traditional hardware, enabling a single receiver to decode virtually any satellite signal through software alone. You will explore the full landscape of digital modulation—from the FSK and PSK variants carrying telemetry from university cubesats to the chirp spread spectrum of LoRa links and the turbo-coded waveforms approaching the Shannon limit. You will build practical skills for decoding real satellite data: extracting telemetry frames, interpreting engineering health data, monitoring spacecraft performance, and contributing to global observation networks like SatNOGS.
The book delivers hands-on expertise for constructing next-generation ground stations. You will design modular, scalable, remotely operable systems integrating SDR transceivers, automated rotator control, Doppler correction, and complete digital signal processing pipelines. You will master the open-source toolchain—GNU Radio, gr-satellites, Gpredict, and the complete SatNOGS ecosystem—that has democratized satellite reception and turned individual operators into citizen scientists.
For those pushing boundaries, the text examines emerging frontiers: cognitive radio for dynamic spectrum access, advanced forward error correction with LDPC codes, experimental modulation design, and even the optical communication systems that may define the next decade of amateur space links. Every concept is grounded in real missions, real signals, and real operational practice.
Whether you are a licensed amateur seeking to expand beyond analog modes, a university student building your first cubesat ground station, an engineer evaluating satellite communication architectures, or simply a curious technologist who has watched satellites streak across the night sky and wondered what they were saying—this book gives you the language to understand them and the tools to join the conversation.
The satellites are transmitting. The data is there for anyone with the knowledge to receive it.

Build that knowledge. Build that station. Start decoding.
