20th-century quarter calf, maroon morocco label, Cockerell marbled boards. Second edition (first published 1790), with the (Sebastian Carter) book-label of David J. Hall. The anonymous continuation by Ellis Cornelia Knight (her first book) of Samuel Johnson's Rasselas (1759) - "Sir John Hawkins, in his life of Dr. Johnson, says, 'that the writer had an intention of marrying his hero, and placing him in a state of permanent felicity.' This passage suggested the idea of the continuation now offered, with the greatest diffidence, to the reader"; dedicated to the Queen, to whom the author (Nelson's poet laureate) was appointed companion in 1805.
