GOOD LEATHER BINDING MINIMAL RUBBING OR SHELF WEAR, MARBLED PAPER EDGE, SOME POORLY CUT PAPER, DUST MARKS, The work of Diogenes Laerta (2nd century AD) "is one of the most valuable of antiquity, by the amount of facts and records it provides us, and by the large number of passages of lost writers he has preserved" (Schoell, History of Greek Literature, V, 227-228). Dedicated to a woman "admirer of Plato" (book III), this collection was made from manuscripts from different libraries, especially those of Alexandria and Pergamum. (See on this subject the History of Hellenistic Greek Literature, by Luciano Canfora). The work was published in Latin, the first time without date, the second in 1475 in Venice. The first edition of the complete text in Greek dates from 1533, at Froben in Basel. This Latin edition is published by Chouet without the name of the translator. The first edition (Greek and Latin) of Hesychios, author of the sixth century, dates from 1572, at Plantin. In 1594, H. Estienne II (see Renouard page 157) gives the second edition in both languages, the Latin translation being that of Guillaume Canter; and in 1595, J. Chouet this Latin translation (probably that of Canter). Onomasticon, Hesychios' original text of which Suidas was used, was lost. The work that bears his name is only an excerpt, compiled around the eighth century, and put in alphabetical order. Seller Inventory # 000667
