"The Discarded Image" is a book by C. S. Lewis that explores the medieval worldview and its influence on literature and thought. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which discusses the medieval model of the universe, including the Ptolemaic system and the four elements. The second part examines the medieval view of nature, including the hierarchy of creatures and the idea of the Great Chain of Being. The third part looks at the medieval view of literature, particularly the use of allegory. Lewis argues that the medieval worldview is an important part of Western intellectual history, and that it should not be dismissed as primitive or superstitious. Rather, he suggests that it offers valuable insights into human nature and the nature of the universe. He also suggests that modern thought has lost something important by rejecting the medieval worldview, including a sense of cosmic order and hierarchy.
