A beautifully bound nine work, thirteen volume collection of the works of French politician and historian Francois Guizot. There are nine works to this uniformly bound thirteen volume set, each here present in the original French.Each of these volumes is the work of Francois Pierre Guillaume Guizot, a French historian, orator and statesman. Once a dominant figure in French politics, he worked to sustain a constitutional monarchy in the country, and opposed attempts by Charles X to usurp legislative power.The first volume is 'Discours Academiques', here in the second edition of 1862.The second volume is 'Meditationes et Etudes Morales' of 1864.The third volume is a work of historical essays entitled 'Essais L'Histoire De France', in the thirteenth edition of 1872.Next is Guizot's studies on fine arts, 'Etudes sur les Beaux-Arts'. This volume is undated, but can be identified as the edition of 1872 via Jisc.The fifth volume is the 1873 edition of the biography of French tragedian Pierre Corneille.Next is the 1874 two volume 'Histoire de Charles 1er'. This biography of Charles the First of England initially appeared in 1827, and was later included in Guizot's study of the English revolution.The next work present is the four volume 'Histoire de la Civilisation en France', 1874.The twelfth volume of this set is titled 'Shakespeare et Sons Temps', a history of the playwright here in the 1876 edition, first published in 1852.The final volume is the more general 'Histoire de la Civilisations en Europe', also present in the 1876 edition.These volumes are in the prize binding of King Edward's School, Birmingham. To a front endpaper of five of these volumes appears a contemporary inscription identifying these works as intended to be the first prize for French, Midsummer, 1877. In uniform full calf school prize bindings. Externally, in lovely condition. Contemporary school prize inscriptions to verso of front endpaper to five of the volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean, with some spotting to first few front and rear papers to some of the volumes, and the odd spot throughout.
