The 1559 edition [presented here] represents the second complete edition of the work in translation [Bowen]. OCLC has 9 copies across 3 title page device variants. No other copies in commerce. . Along with The Prince, The Discourses on the First Decade of Livy established Machiavelli as one of the most important, foundational, and revolutionary minds in the history of political philosophy. The Discourses hold vital importance in helping to clarify and contextualize Machiavelli as a republican and not, as so many have assumed from a misreading of The Prince, a sychophant to and advocate for tyrants. The translation of this work into French marks a milestone in its influence upon philosophers like Diderot and Voltaire, the West, and the World. 19th Century Mottled Calf, Gilt Detailing Third French Edition [Second Complete French Edition].…
