A Discourse on the Authenticity and Divine Origin of the Old Testament . Translated . by the Rev. John Reynell Wreford

A Discourse On The Authenticity And Divine Origin Of The Old Testament. Translated. By The Rev. John Reynell Wreford by Jacob Élisée Cellérier. This English translation presents Cellérier's systematic examination of the Old Testament’s authenticity and divine origin, prefaced by translator’s and author’s introductions and ending with a program of illustrating the scriptures in Geneva. Cellérier argues that the Pentateuch is written contemporaneously with Moses and forms the foundation of the entire Old Testament; he cites internal and external evidence, including the Samaritan Pentateuch and ancient versions, to support its antiquity and stability. He asserts direct proofs of divine inspiration—miracles, prophecies, and prophetic harmony—and addresses objections about violence and ritual. The later chapters discuss the post-Pentateuch books, the integrity of the canon, and the Mosaic constitution’s moral and social objectives, such as care for the poor, strangers, and ethical governance, aimed at preparing Israel for the Messiah. The translator notes how this work complements earlier studies on the New Testament and aspires to strengthen faith and understanding, inviting Christians to study the Old Covenant with renewed reverence and trust.
