Browne (1664/5-1735) was Lord Bishop of Cork and Rosse. He was born in County Dublin and entered Trinity Colleg in 1682, where he was a contemporary of Swift. Between 1713 and 1722, he wrote 4 pamphlets on the custom of drinking in memory of the dead, which he considered a sacrilege. This attack on the custom of drinking to the health of the King, including the late King William of Orange, earned him nothing but ridicule. ESTC T63505; T62230; T55085 Disbound.
