A Discourse Preached In The Episcopal Chapel, Cowgate, Edinburgh, Jan. 18, 1816; Being The Day Appointed. For A Thanksgiving For Peace by Archibald Alison is a sermon delivered at the Episcopal Chapel in Edinburgh on January 18, 1816, commemorating the day appointed for thanksgiving for peace. The discourse reflects on divine providence and the moral governance of God in the aftermath of revolutionary and Napoleonic conflict. Alison contends that the events demonstrate the stability of heaven's counsel, the fall of atheistic and revolutionary ideas, and the restoration of civil order and prosperity. He structures the sermon around three areas of thanksgiving: as men, as citizens, and as Christians, celebrating human moral improvement, political liberty and national leadership, and the triumph of the Gospel across nations. The discourse calls for humility, piety, and public virtue, urging readers to view peace as a blessing that reshapes both church and state toward a more virtuous and hopeful future.
