Discourses Preached At The Temple Church, And On Several Occasions. To Which Are Added, Discourses On The Use And Intent Of Prophecy &C by Thomas Sherlock. This four-volume collection brings exhortatory sermons delivered at Temple Church in London, examining biblical passages to argue that true religion provides steady comfort amid life’s evils, clarifies the conscience, and resists irreligion and misguided piety. Drawing on Psalms, Luke, Matthew, Romans and other texts, Sherlock defends a rational, Gospel-based faith that surpasses natural religion or external ritual. The pastorally toned discourses address repentance, humility, conscience, grace, the dangers of wealth, inward worship, and the alignment of reason with revelation. Notable illustrations draw on Peter, Herod, Lazarus, and the rich man, among others, to show how true religion governs speech, conduct, and trust in providence. The aim is to guide clergy and lay readers toward genuine, reasoned faith and perseverance through life’s fears and guilt through divine grace.
