Discover Java

No computer programming language has ever received more attention than Java has. Now, with Discover Java, you can not only decide for yourself if the attention is deserved but also begin creating your own Java applets. Even if you've never programmed before, thanks to the expertise of authors Ed Tittel and Bill Brogden you'll quickly be building interactive, multimedia applets that anyone with a Web browser can use.

Complete with a bonus CD-ROM containing the Sun Microsystems JDK (Java Developer's Kit) and ready-to-use example applets from the book, Discover Java doesn't weigh you down with theory and concepts. Instead, you get right to work creating Java applets that do things like… Jazz up Web pages with scrolling, "ticker tape" text messages; animated text that wanders around the screen; animated characters that respond to the user's mouse movements; and random, "slide show" images Present real-time data over the Web -- like sports scores, stock prices, and news headlines Facilitate access to medical data (see the impressive Java-driven user interface to huge databases of DNA sequences) Enhance students' educational experience with interactive multimedia simulations of electrons moving in a plasma, three-dimensional molecular models, and thermodynamics simulations Interface with client/server applications to implement online chats, games, and databases

Plus, as with all of the titles in our Discover series, Discover Java features the 6-Point Advantage… Color Tear-Out Card -- Key information and shortcuts that get you up to speed fast Discovery Center -- Quick summaries of the chapters' major points collected at the back of the book Real-Life Vignettes -- Winning stories on how real people use technology to improve their lives Visual Index -- Convenient picture maps direct you to the features you're looking for Web Path -- Handy references to feature- or topic-related Web sites Bonus Section -- Added-value tips and timesaving techniques at the end of each chapter
