Synopsis
For the traveler who wishes to discover the Spain of history, romance, art, and legend, this illustrated guide to its Parador hotels is an excellent companion. Whether castle or convent, estate or village, the Paradors are renowned for their comfort, service, cuisine, and the beauty of their locations. In Discovering Spain, now in paperback, master photographer Michael Busselle journeys to all 76 Paradors, weaving a fascinating web of tours for the explorer. An index to the Paradors details their amenities, and there is historical information on places of interest in each region. Throughout, Busselle's arresting color images capture Spain in all its moods and seasons. Among Michael Busselle's award-winning travel books are France: The Four Seasons, Wine Lover's Guide to France, and Discovering the Villages of France.
From Library Journal
This is the revised edition of Busselle's Castles in Spain (1989), which the reviewer could not acquire for comparative examination. Using the Michelin road maps for Spain, which the unsuspecting buyer must purchase separately, photographer/travel writer Busselle devises a motoring tour encompassing all 76 state-run hotels (paradors), affording him the opportunity to comment on the quality of the accommodation, cuisine, and ambiance of each. Costs are never mentioned. The itinerary includes excursions to neighboring hillside towns, castles, and palaces, but historical information is slight since much space is devoted to the lush, enticing photographs that dominate this cumbersome (8" x 10") guide. Road directions are precise. A "Gazetteer of the Paradors" provides phone/FAX numbers, address, and number of rooms. Travelers are better served by either the superb Eyewitness Guide or Lonely Planet's guide to Spain. Not recommended.?Lonnie Weatherby, McGill Univ., Montreal
