Synopsis

The authors analyze the New Left's response to developments in post-World War II American capitalism and argue that it was a logical response to the advanced capitalist world. They further argue that the SDS's disintegration into traditional Marxist-Leninist factions and terrorist groups was not a natural consequence of radicalism but as a consequence of the New Left's inability to cope with questions of organizational forms. Finally, Calvert and Neiman suggest that the visions of the New Left may once again become the embodiment of the visions that will shape the course of historical possibility. The authors were both deeply involved with the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS.)
