The Disruption of the Methodist Episcopal Church, 1844-1846: Comprising a Thirty Years' History of the Relations of the Two Methodisms (Classic Reprint)

This book examines the events that divided the Methodist Episcopal Church into two distinct branches in 1844. Focusing on the attitudes of both the northern and southern factions towards slavery, the author analyzes the political and social tensions that led to the split. The author argues that, despite the common belief that pro-slavery sentiments motivated the southern branch, both groups had historically taken similar stances on the issue. The book delves into the nuances of the debate, exploring the different interpretations of Methodist doctrine and the role of abolitionist agitation in exacerbating tensions. It highlights the importance of understanding the historical context to accurately assess the causes of the division and its significance in the history of American Methodism.
