A Dissertation Upon Parties;: In Several Letters To Caleb D'anvers, Esq; Dedicated To The Right Honourable Sir Robert Walpole — Viscount Henry St. John Bolingbroke. This work is a political treatise from early 18th-century Britain that examines how political parties arise, operate, and influence government. Bolingbroke chronicles the emergence of the Whig and Tory factions, the Revolution and its aftermath, and the ongoing struggle to preserve the independence of Parliament against Crown prerogative and corruption. Through a sequence of letters and dedications, he argues that the British Constitution rests on three estates (the Lords, the Commons, and the Crown) and that liberty depends on maintaining this balance. He laments the growth of corruption, electoral manipulation, and expanded royal revenue as threats to liberty, and advocates prudent reforms—especially more frequent elections and robust parliamentary oversight—to ensure a stable, free government. The work stands as a historical-political meditation on the endurance and proper design of Britain’s constitutional framework.
