About this title

Synopsis

This book delves into the complex relationship between forest fuel distribution, dynamics, and factors like time, climate, biota, and topography in the Smoky Mountains National Park. The author examines 35 low elevation forest stands to assess the impact of 37 years of fire suppression and finds that topographic moisture, elevation, and disturbance are the most critical factors affecting forest structure in the absence of regular fires. By studying decomposition rates and downed wood biomass, the author sheds light on the dynamics of forest fuel and how it influences the ecosystem's response to disturbances. The book concludes that understanding the variables shaping forest fuel accumulation is crucial for managing and preserving these ecosystems, particularly in the face of increasing fuel buildup due to fire suppression.
