In fair condition. Moderate wear to extremities with scuffing to corners and end bands. Front joint cracking at base with binding exposed. Soiling to cloth with irregular staining overall. Charles A. Curtis bookplate on front pastedown. Inner hinge tender. Edw. Baum s May 1838 on second fly leaf. Interior lightly toned with scattered foxing. Foxing heavy at times. Age-staining prevalent throughout text. Free of known markings. Binding shaken but intact. Please see photos. First American edition. Robert Southey was an English poet of the Romantic school, and Poet laureate from 1813 until his death. Like the other Lake Poets, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Southey began as a radical but became steadily more conservative as he gained respect for Britain and its institutions.
