The Doctrine of the Atonement Deduced from Scripture, and Vindicated from Misrepresentations and Objections, Discourses

The Doctrine Of The Atonement Deduced From Scripture, And Vindicated From Misrepresentations And Objections, Discourses by John Cotter Macdonnell. This collection comprises six lectures delivered before the University of Dublin as part of the Macdonnell lectures in 1857. The work defends the doctrine of the atonement against rationalist and Unitarian criticisms, contrasts Mosaic sacrifices with Christ's sacrifice, and provides a detailed Epistle-to-Hebrews-based analysis of propitiation, expiation, and vicariousness. Macdonnell engages with Jowett, Maurice, Bahr, and others, argues for the necessity and scope of remission of sins, distinguishes substitution and mediation, and discusses the relation of the atonement to God's moral government. The Preface explains the historical context since Archbishop Magee's Atonement and Sacrifice and outlines the aims: restating Scripture evidence, defending the doctrine, and uniting defenders against common danger. The volume further includes appendices and dissertations on the symbolism of sacrifice and related topics. The work remains a primary early defense of classic Protestant soteriology.
