A scarce and early edition of Francis Baily's extended Doctrine of Life-Annuities with two interesting provenances, Henry Bickersteth and the Equitable Life Assurance Society. Recently rebacked, with the bookplate of Henry Bickersteth, Baron Langdale, to the front pastedowns. Complete in Two Volumes. Title continued- Together with Several Useful Tables connected with the Subject; to which is now added an Appendix, containing a New Method of Calculating and Arranging such Tables. With a separate title page for the Appendix in Volume II. With a handwritten letter from the Equitable Life Assurance Society, 1918, stating 'This book. given to the society by Miss I. E. Dell. They belonged to her father who was for many years a Clerk in the office". Henry Bickersteth, Baron Langdale, 1783-1851, was a British law reformer, and master of the rolls. "His work on life annuities and insurances attempted systematically to algebraize the subject and represent various cases of annuities and assurances by symbols. He was also one of the first not to rely on Price's Northampton mortality tables. In 1808 he published his highly successful and authoritative Doctrine of Interest and Annuities Analytically Investigated and Explained. This was followed in 1810 by his sequel, Doctrine of Life-Annuities and Assurances Analytically Investigated and Practically Explained. The latter also contained a critical guide to the several life-assurance companies in London, which later that year was published separately as a very popular pamphlet" DNB. In a full calf binding.
