Partly printed vellum document from the General Land office of the United States dated October 7, 1834. Its size is 16 1/8 in. wide x 9 7/8 in. high. Bearing the Land Office Seal. It is in effect a deed of land from the U. S. government to one James Nofsinger. Partial transcription reads: "Whereas, James Nofsinger of Monroe county, Ohio has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States a certificate of the register of the Land Office at Marietta, whereby it appears full payment has been made by the said James Nofsinger according to the provisions of the Act of Congress of the 24th of April, 1820…for the northwest quarter of the southeast quarter of section 22 in Township 4 of Range 4 in the district of lands subject to sale at Marietta Ohio containing 40 acres and sixty hundredths of an acre…" It bears three signatures: (1) that of Elijah Hayward, Commissioner of the General land Office; (2) that of A. J. (Andrew Jackson) Donelson on his own behalf as Secretary to President Andrew Jackson and (3) the name "Andrew Jackson," signed by Donelson as the President's secretary. Andrew Jackson Donelson (August 25, 1799 June 26, 1871) was an American diplomat,a candidate for Vice President of the United States, and a nephew of Andrew Jackson. Donelson assisted his uncle during the 1824 and 1828 presidential campaigns and, in 1829, he became Jackson's private secretary when his uncle became President. He remained Jackson's private secretary throughout his two terms in office. The document shows two horizontal folds and two vertical folds. The upper left-hand corner shows some curling to the vellum; some stains are present to the printed surface and to the reverse. Later notations in ink are present on the reverse evidencing the recording of the deed in the records of Monroe County, Ohio. The document has been stored in its folded condition.
