Documents Inédits Sur La Grande Peste De 1348 (Consultation De La Faculté De Paris, Consultation D'un Praticien De Montpellier, Description De Guillaume De Machaut): Publiés Avec Une Introduction Et Des Notes by L. A. Joseph Michon. This scholarly edition assembles three medieval works addressing the plague that swept Europe in 1348: a consultation by the Faculty of Medicine of Paris, a parallel work by a Montpellier practitioner, and Guillaume de Machaut’s contemporary description. With an extensive introduction and footnotes, Michon situates the texts within their historical, intellectual, and clinical milieu, discusses competing theories of etiology (astrological and humoral) and questions of contagion, and explains the early organization of Paris’s medical school and its rival Montpellier. The volume offers critical apparatus, biographical notes on the authors, and comparisons among the schools and genres, presenting a valuable historical source for the history of medicine, public health, and medieval literature. The edition preserves the voices of late medieval scholars while inviting modern readers to assess how a continent confronted plague.
