All of these documents relate to transfers of properties at or near what is now the northwest corner of Nassau and Cedar Streets in New York City. This tract is one block north of Wall Street and one block east of Broadway. More than one actual lot is reflected in these transfers, which accounts for the broken line of ownership. The first two transfers here date from the period of Dutch control of New York. These papers were purchased by High Ridge Books from a descendant of Anthony Dey, the last owner of the properties represented by these papers. Anthony Dey lived on this property and maintained his law practice there (63 Cedar St.) at least until 1839. The Longworth NYC directory for 1839 shows Deyâ s office at 71 Cedar St. It is not clear if the office was moved or the street numbers changed. Dey was a noted lawyer and businessman in New York. He was one of three impresarios who established the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company in 1830, the first attempt in the United States to colonize Texas. Anthony Dey died in 1859 at age 82.
