Dogs (Animals Are Not Like Us)

Describes the physical characteristics and behavior of dogs, pointing out ways in which they differ from people

PreSchool-Grade 2-Extremely simple introductions illustrated with full-color photos. Each two-page spread begins with the same line and focuses on a specific physical characteristic of the animal under discussion, e.g., "Cats are not like us. Cats can see at night much better than we can." The books continue by examining other senses, how each creature communicates, and how it moves. Some statements beg for more information, such as why dogs see only black, white, and gray. The many close-up and inset photographs effectively illustrate the points made in the texts. In each book, Meadows suggests related activities (such as visiting a museum "...to learn about the ways horses have helped people...") and provides lists of videos, Web sites, and titles for further reading. The large print, one to four lines per page, and vocabulary make these volumes accessible to beginning readers; children needing more information can turn to the "Eyewitness" titles (DK) or books by Gail Gibbons.
