Grade 4 Up-- Dogs as man's best friend, as companions, and as workers are portrayed in this charming book. O'Neill relates facts concerning dogs and the kinds of work they do, as well as anecdotes and incidents about dogs. Crisp color photographs tell much of the story and add to the book's appeal. The text, too, is lively and informative. It introduces dogs and tells how humans first befriended them. It then goes on to discuss the many ways in which dogs work for people. Included are dogs as herders and livestock-guards, dogs as guides for the blind and the deaf, dogs as sled teams, dogs as K-9s, dogs as movie stars, and dogs as search-and-rescue workers, to mention a few. This would be a good book for children who don't know much about dogs as workers, as well as for children who have read a great deal. Most children should enjoy it, as it comes alive through photographs and text.
