Dogs and Men

A short, humane essay on what we owe the animals who love us - and five portraits of the dogs who taught the author that lesson.

Henry Childs Merwin (1853-1929) was a Boston lawyer, a biographer of Jefferson and Burr, and a regular contributor to The Atlantic, where Dogs and Men first appeared in 1910. It is not a manual and has nothing to say about breeding or breed points. It is a reflection on character, loyalty and moral obligation, built around five dogs Merwin knew: Pedro, Carus, Don, Sylvan Roamer and Toby.

Written at the height of the American genteel essay, it is the kind of small book that people press on one another, and it has been quietly loved for over a century.

This edition features:

• A classic American essay on the bond between people and their dogs
• Five canine portraits: Pedro, Carus, Don, Sylvan Roamer and Toby
• First published in The Atlantic in 1910, at the height of the genteel essay
• A short, giftable read for anyone who has loved a dog
