Down to the Sea for Science: 75 Years of Ocean Research Education & Exploration at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Home to several marine science establishments, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, is ideally situated for studies of the sea. Its proximity to both warm and cold waters as well as commercial fishing grounds, and no doubt its charming land's end location, drew the first marine scientists in the early 1870s. The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) joined an already thriving research community here in 1930. In the seventy-five years since then, it has grown into the world's largest private institution dedicated to research and higher education at the frontier of ocean science. The book chronicles events that led up to the official founding as well as pivotal moments in the Institution's even and a half decades. Extensively illustrated.

Vicky Cullen, Executive Editor at WHOI, has been writing and editing Institution publications and managing other outreach efforts since 1973. She holds a B.A. from the University of Nebraska and a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University. In addition to her communications work for WHOI, she has written and produced a number of publications for the National Science Foundation, Joint Oceanographic Institutions, and The Oceanography Society. Ms. Cullen is WHOI's Director of 75th Anniversary Activities.
