About this Item
The Northern Lights or the Aurora Borealis, and the sun at midnight as seen from the North Cape, Norway. Handcoloured copperplate engraving from Bertuch's "Bilderbuch fur Kinder" (Picture Book for Children), Weimar, 1805. Friedrich Johann Bertuch (1747-1822) was a German publisher and man of arts most famous for his 12-volume encyclopedia for children illustrated with 1,200 engraved plates on natural history, science, costume, mythology, etc., published from 1790-1830. The top illustration captures the ethereal beauty of the aurora borealis illuminating a dense, rugged forest. The vibrant, golden light arcs through the sky, casting a surreal glow over the rocky terrain and trees. The setting evokes a sense of wonder and mystery, encapsulating the northern lights' enchanting spectacle. The bottom illustration shifts to a maritime scene, portraying rugged coastal cliffs towering over a restless sea. The sun sets dramatically on the horizon, painting the sky in warm hues while a small vessel braves the open waters. The intricate details of the cliffs and the textured waves convey the stark beauty and majesty of the natural world. This engraving exemplifies Bertuch's dedication to merging educational value with visual artistry. Part of his 12-volume encyclopedia for children, this plate is an excellent representation of how 19th-century publications sought to inspire curiosity and respect for nature. These vivid illustrations invite viewers to explore the dynamic interplay between land, sea, and sky. Condition Report: The engraving is in very good condition for its age, with vibrant hand-coloring. Minor foxing is visible in the margins, with slight edge wear and minimal discoloration. Framing Tip: Enhance the visual drama of these landscapes with a dark wooden or metallic frame and a double mat, using a subtle outer color to complement the engraving's earthy tones. UV-protective glass will preserve the hand-coloring's vibrancy while safeguarding against light damage.
