Dramatic and Narrative Poems

Dramatic And Narrative Poems by John Joshua Proby is a captivating collection of early 19th-century English verse that intertwines myth, legend, and romance into extensive narrative pieces. The principal poem, The Revenge of Guendolen, explores a dynastic conflict throughout Britain’s mythic history, featuring Brutus, Corineus, Locrine, Estrildis, Guendolen, and Boarex in a saga filled with love, betrayal, vengeance, and warfare, alongside prophetic omens, journeys through Avalon and the afterlife, and visions of divine justice. The volume also includes The Bower of Melissa, a romantically charged tale in cantos, where Cadwall and Paladour pursue Melissa through enchantment and magical trials, aided by Morgana and figures reminiscent of Archimago; and The Statues, a story of Zeynu al Asnam, a prince guided by oracles to establish a stable rule through four statues representing Justice, Religion, Fortitude, and Prudence. Engaging with classical epic theory, the poems draw inspiration from Homer, Virgil, Milton, and Gray, while examining the moral and political responsibilities of rulers. Originally published in 1810 in London as a two-volume set, this work continues to resonate with readers today.
