A sharp, historical look at the stage, its authors, and the performers who shaped early modern theatre in Britain.
This volume gathers essays and commentary on the political and moral uses of the theatre, paired with remarks on contemporary dramatic writers and the performers who brought their works to life. It rails against misgivings about the stage while celebrating the craft of acting, scene design, and musical pieces that defined period productions. Readers will encounter vivid character studies, evaluations of actors, and thoughtful observations about how theatre reflected society.
From judgments on the elegance and authenticity of performance to discussions of the responsibilities of managers and playwrights, the book offers a window into the critical culture surrounding the theatre. It surveys notable figures, applauds strong performances, and notes where productions succeeded or fell short, all while tracing the evolution of dramatic form and stagecraft.
- Character sketches of leading actors and their signature roles.
- Evaluations of plays, songs, and technical elements like lighting and scenery.
- Observations on management decisions and their impact on performances.
- Historical context on how theatre questioned and reflected public morals.
Ideal for readers of theatre history and drama criticism, this edition suits those seeking a grounded understanding of the era’s stage culture and its lasting influence on performance.
