Zahlreiche Versuche, die Ringparabel zu aktualisieren, bezeugen zwar die gro�e Bedeutung des Textes in der gegenw�rtigen Toleranzdebatte, f�hren aber zu einer instrumentellen Disqualifizierung der Erz�hlung zum feuilletonistischen Gemeinplatz. Auf diese Weise ger�t nicht nur der komplexe �sthetische Rahmen der Parabel in Lessings ›Dramatischem Gedicht‹ aus dem Blickfeld; es wird auch vergessen, dass die Ringparabel selbst eine lange �berlieferungsgeschichte besitzt und dass sie ein ebenso zentrales Erz�hlmuster des Toleranz- wie des Intoleranzdiskurses darstellte. Der vorliegende Band m�chte gegen die pr�sentistischen Reduktionen und Missverst�ndnisse der Ringparabel die literarische Geschichte dieses wirkm�chtigen Erz�hlmodells rekonstruieren und an diesem Leitfaden entlang eine Arch�ologie des europ�ischen Toleranzgedankens liefern. Erhellt werden zun�chst die Transformationen der Parabel von der Antike bis zu Boccaccios Melchisedech-Novelle, um dann auf Lessing einzugehen und dessen Rezeption bis in die Moderne zu verfolgen.
