Drifter (Paperback)

The story "Drifter" by Frank Sol is a heartfelt flash fiction set in Maverick Springs, exploring themes of connection, healing, and love amidst hardship. It follows Trevor, a man on the run who finds refuge in a small rural farm owned by Logan and Dorothy. Through a series of intimate moments-meeting Trevor in the barn, sharing meals, working side by side in storms, and an intense, tender relationship-they gradually discover trust and affection.
As Trevor begins to feel a sense of belonging, the story reveals deeper layers: Dorothy's terminal illness, which she confesses to Trevor with grace, and her wish for her family's happiness. The narrative then unfolds into a poignant exploration of love, honesty, and sacrifice, culminating in a mutual acknowledgment of their feelings, a passionate intimacy, and Trevor's internal struggles with guilt and desire.
The story also touches on the town's quiet life, with moments of community, kindness, and the looming presence of law enforcement, hinting at Trevor's past. Despite the shadows, hopeful themes emerge-trust, acceptance, and the possibility of a new beginning.
Tragedy strikes with Dorothy's death, leaving Logan and Trevor to grieve and find solace in each other's support. Their bond deepens as they confront their feelings, and the story closes on a note of tentative hope: embracing honesty and love amid life's storms. The narrative is rich with emotional depth, balancing raw vulnerability with the promise of renewal, set against the backdrop of a peaceful, resilient small town.

Born and raised in small-town Ontario, Frank Sol is a die-hard romantic who enjoys home-cooked dinners, homemade wine, lots of chocolate, and a lot of sex.

He published his first novel, Bareback Mountain in 2007.

He lives a double life, writing gay erotica under the pen name of Frank Sol and penning tales of science fiction space operas and high fantasy for fun as Matt Kirkby.

When not busy writing, he spends his time helping his partner with his hand-crafted rocking chair business -- Off Your Rocker -- and trying to maintain some control over his cat. He still thinks that no gift is better than a new book.
