Drive Method (Paperback)

Most companies believe people can be bribed into brilliance, and customers into loyalty. So they hand out bonuses, bolt on perks, sprinkle a little gamification over the top, and then act surprised when the motivation collapses the moment the rewards stop.

The Drive Method explains why this keeps happening and what to build instead. Drawing on behavioral science, evolutionary biology, and the strange yet obvious lessons of games, Roman Rackwitz, one of Europe's longest-standing pioneers of gamification and motivation design, shows that motivation is not a fixed personal trait but the predictable product of the system around it. Change the conditions and people stop merely complying; they commit.

What follows is not another lecture on purpose or a manifesto for points and badges, but a practical method for turning motivational insight into motivational infrastructure: how to read what an environment is actually rewarding, why most incentive schemes quietly produce the behavior nobody wanted, and how to design workplaces, products, and loyalty programs that keep people engaged long after the external rewards run out.

If you lead a team, design a product, shape company culture, or run a loyalty program, and you are tired of buying short bursts of compliance at rising cost, this is the book that hands you the tools to build engagement that lasts without push, perks, or pressure.
