At the tender age of fourteen, Edwin Hale Lincoln longed to experience the struggle and hardship of the Civil War firsthand. Too young to enlist, however, his father granted permission for Lincoln to join the Fifth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry as a drummer boy under the care of his cousin Jarius Lincoln. During his nine-month service, he traveled with his regiment along the coastal regions of North Carolina. Lincoln, a highly intelligent and well-written individual, recorded the daily affairs of army life such as drills, mail, and the arrival of the paymaster along with the excitement and causalities of war. After the Civil War, Lincoln continued his involvement in military interests by serving as a high-ranking officer in the Grand Army of the Republic, eventually to become National Vice Commander after 70 years of service. Lincoln, along with his active involvement in the G.A.R., also became a famous photographer with many of his works still exhibited. "Drummer Boy: The Civil War Diary of Edwin Hale Lincoln," filled with 15 full-page photographs and maps, provides glimpses of an ordinary individual caught up in the actions of war, who was destined for greatness well into the twentieth century.

Karl Lincoln Marty, great grandson of Edwin Hale Lincoln, developed an interest in life histories early while visiting his grandfather Leo Lincoln. Graduating from Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania, his Biology degree led him to work in natural history and education. He currently teaches at a non-profit school for children with autism and resides in Yarmouthport, Massachusetts with his wife and two daughters. Lee C. Drickamer received a B.A. degree from Oberlin College in Ohio and a Ph.D. in zoology from Michigan State University. He has published two previous history books, one, which is co-authored with Leo L. Lincoln, son of Edwin Hale Lincoln and grandfather of Karl Marty. Currently, Drickamer is Regent’s Professor of Biology and the Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at Northern State University in Flagstaff.
