The Dublin Review, Part 2

The Dublin Review, Part 2 by Nicholas Patrick Wiseman is a 1841 Catholic periodical piece that blends literary biography, Catholic historiography, missionary reportage, and literary criticism. It surveys Schiller’s late life, highlighting his domestic happiness, patronage, and inner intellectual development that shaped his esthetic philosophy and moral teaching. It offers a historiographical defense of Boniface VIII and Celestine V against Protestant caricature, arguing that abdication and imperial power were misrepresented by polemical sources, and it marshals testimonies and Vatican evidence to defend legitimate papal authority. The Annals of the Propagation of the Faith section extols missionary work in Texas, the Gambier Islands, Africa, China, and India, emphasizing education, local leadership, and social renewal. Book notices engage Emerson, Housman, and other contemporary authors, while setting a generally apologetic tone in favor of Catholic scholarship. The set pieces are tied by a program to bolster Catholic culture, defend Catholic figures, and counter Protestant historiography through extensive citations and archival reference, within a Catholic editorial framework.
