Duino Elegies

Named after the Castle of Duino on a rocky headland of the Adriatic, the "Duino Elegies" speak in a voice that is both intimate and majestic on the mysteries of human life and our attempt, in the words of the translator, "to use our self-consciousness to some advantage: to transcend, through art and the imagination, our self-deception and our fear".

"[Gary Miranda's translation is] the nearest to a definitive Elegies we're apt ever to get in the English language." --John Mood, Author of Rilke on Love and Other Dificulties

"This is among the three most beautiful books I know. With every reading, the poems grow larger, magnificent. No other translation compares to this one. Gary Miranda's fusion of music and meaning transforms Rilke's Elegies into living beings in English." --Jan Freeman, author of Hyena and director of Paris Press
