Over the years geoscientists have realized the great complexity of the earth and its environment. In particular, the knowledge of the geopotential field and its anomalies has become an important issue. It turned out that dedicated highly accurate sensors, when operating in an isolated manner have their shortcomings. Combining globally available spaceborne data with local airborne and/or terrestrial observations is therefore the way forward. At this stage of development inverse modelling of spaceborne geodata is a mathematical challenge which should include the numerical progress obtainable by modern multivariate approximation. These research notes are devoted to a new and promising way of recovering the geopotential from spaceborne data. The presentation covers: the current state of geopotential determination by outer harmonics and harmonic splines / the introduction of harmonic wavelets and the explanation of their essential properties (i.e., basis property, decorrelation, and fast computation) / the mathematical modelling of (inverse) problems of satellite technology (for example, satellite--to--satellite tracking, satellite gradiometry) and their solution by multiresolution regularization.
