First Printing is stated on the top of the copyright page. On half-title page author writes "Inscribed for Georgella Hefty by Stephen Spender - November 1959." Book has Georgella Hefty's name and address and date of 1953 (in ink on right FEP) which means that Ms. Hefty had this book for 6 years before she tracked down the author to sign her copy!! This thin book of poetry is in VERY GOOD++ condition with grey paper boards over 1/4 black paper binding with gilt horizontal line pattern on left of front board with 1/2" Random House logo towards bottom of pattern of lines. Book's spine is slightly skewed with bold gilt lettering, but book's binding and insides are tight, bright and clean. The fascinating inserts include a program laid in from The Library of Congress "Stephen Spender : Reading His Poetry, Presented under the Auspices of The Gertrude Clarke Whittall Poetry and Literature Fund, The Coolidge Auditorium, Monday Evening, November 2, 1959." which confirms where the previous owner met the author and acquired his signature! There is also a very unusual 3" x 4" blue, dark blue, black & white card on glossy card stock. The card is a "three dimensional" version of Spender's "The Edge of Being" book with spine and top edge showing on its cover and the following revealing text inside: "Patience will be rewarded."The Edge of Being" is on its way. From all the characters of the AIR RESEARCH DIVISION." This card, cut in the shape of the "3-D" book must have been released to fans who were awaiting this book's (belated) release.Book is composed of 26 of Spender's poems. Last page of book is "Acknowledgments and Note" which mentions that many of the poems first appeared in The New Statesman and Nation, The Listener, Horizon, Time and Tide, The New Yorker, Poetry, The Nation, Wake, Voices and in Spender's book about Civil Defence (sic) - Citizens in War and After. This page also mentions that two of Spender's poems were read at Harvard and at Columbia University's Phi Beta Kappa celebrations in June 1948.
