Achtergrond: Talrijke studies geven aan dat groene thee rijk aan polyfenol verschillende risicofactoren voor hart- en vaatziekten (HVZ) kan verminderen. Er is beperkt onderzoek gedaan naar de impact van deze drank op Schotland. Doel: Het effect van groene thee op cardiovasculaire risicofactoren in een Schotse populatie onderzoeken Ontwerp: HVZ risicofactoren zoals polsgolfsnelheid (PWV), totaal lichaamsgewicht, bloeddruk (BP) en totaal cholesterol werden gemeten in een nuchtere toestand bij baseline, post groene thee (Post GT), post washout (Post WO) en post controle (Post CON) periodes. Andere beoordeelde variabelen waren onder meer voedselinname, lengte, body mass index (BMI), totale fenolen in urine en antioxidantcapaciteit. Resultaten: Significante verminderingen traden op in PWV, p = 0,01, en totale lichaamsgewicht, p = 0,012, na consumptie van groene thee. Hoewel geen significante duidelijke afnames in BP, p = 0,065 en totaal cholesterol, p = 0,009, en toenames in totaal polyfenolen, p = 0,035, en antioxidantcapaciteit, p = 0,030, werden waargenomen na stratificatie van proefpersonen als responders of niet-responders. Conclusie: Regelmatige consumptie van groene thee lijkt het algehele risico op HVZ te verminderen.
