Thick 8vo (7 3/4" x 4 7/8" x 2"), full mottled sheep with label on spine, illustrated with many B&W in-text figures, formulae, and tables; Appendix, Index, xix, [xx] + 682 pages, [1] Errata. Weight: 1 lb. 7 oz. Tight copy with solid text block. Leather and label are worn on surfaces and edges. Moderate uniform toning and occasional light stains to paper. Foredges of paper quite browned. No notes, underlining, or annotations. Previous owner's small bookplate on front pastedown. Prof Edward Turner MD, FRS, FRSE, FRCPE (1796 - 1837) was a Jamaican-born, British physician and chemist, known for his work on atomic weights, and as a populariser of the atomic theory of Dalton. He was the author of a popular Chemistry textbook that was the first to incorporate chemical symbols and formulae as well as organic chemistry. His reviser, Dr. Franklin Bache (1792 - 1864), was a prominent American physician and expert on chemistry and pharmacopeias: Professor of Chemistry in the Franklin Institute (1826-32), the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (1831-41), thence to Jefferson Medical College. In 1819, Bache published a "System of Chemistry for the Use of Students of Medicine"; and in connection with Dr. George Wood, he prepared in 1830, a Pharmacopoeia that was adopted by a national convention of physicians, and became the basis of the present U. We are professional booksellers, autograph dealers, and antiquarians (members of the ABAA & ILAB) who began in business in 1969. We pride ourselves on providing books, autographs, art, and artifacts in the Best Available Condition (typically Fine, Very interesting, Scarce, or Unusual items).
Our descriptions strive to be scrupulously accurate. Whenever possible, we detail flaws, include photographs of stock listed (rather than "stock photos"), and provide some background on the authors, creators, or rare items catalogued.
Our principal expert, James M. Borg, has a broad background academically (Univ. of Michigan & its Law School; MA & Ph.D., Northwestern Univ.).
Professionally, he served as an Army officer during the Vietnam War; subsequently founded successful firms; concurrently taught English, history, and business communications at colleges and universities; and thereafter worked as a management cconsultant for a major long-established Cambridge-based consulting firm and a top accounting firm.
In addition, Dr. Borg has serious longtime collecting interests and expertise in books, autographs, selected art, artifacts, and antiquities.
All sales are made from orders placed on line, and--regrettably--our premises and inventory are no longer open for visitors.
Shipping terms
All our books and items are carefully packed. They are usually shipped in Manilla padded-envelopes or sturdy boxes with additional bubble wrap, styrofoam "popcorn," or other protective layers. We strive to ship within 24 hours of receiving orders--allowing extra time for weekends or holidays.
Books shipped within the United States are usually shipped via USPS Media Mail. Postal charges for Media Mail typically run from $3.17 to around $5. When site-posted charges--usually $4.95--exceed actual USPS charges, any overage helps to defray our packaging and shipping costs.
Those books requiring extra-swift transport or -care are often shipped via USPS Priority Mail. Postage charges usually average $13.50 for up to precisely 2 pounds, but rapidly escalate thus possibly making it necessary to contact clients.
Autographs & manuscripts, art & artifacts are usually shipped in stout boxes with padding and reinforcement. Because Media Mail rates do not then apply, we normally use USPS Priority mail, but also ship via UPS and FedEx. Extra charges for insurance are often necessary for valuable items.
Overseas' shipments (as to Europe) weighing with packaging Not more than 2 pounds usually incur postage charges of between $13.50 to $25. Those between 2 - 4 pounds average around $35. Packages of more than 4 pounds usually need to be quoted.
