Empires of Profit tells a series of dramatic stories to illustrate the greed, benevolence, and ignorance of western business in the developing world. Daniel Litvin is the director of Percept Risk and Strategy Ltd, a consultancy which provides analyses to companies on social and ethical issues. He was formerly policy advisor to Rio Tinto plc, the mining multinational (where he drafted guidelines on human rights for the company’s managers), and before that was the environment and resources correspondent for The Economist. In 1998, he was joint winner of Young Financial Journalist of the Year, awarded by the Wincott Foundation, and was also short-listed for the World Bank award for the ethics of international business and the Greenpeace award for best business coverage. Daniel Litvin has an master’s degree with distinction in anthropology and development from the London School of Economics, and a 1st-class BA in philosophy, politics and economics from Oxford. He lives in London.
