Full title - AN ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF DOMESTIC ECONOMY: COMPRISING SUBJECTS CONNECTED WITH THE INTERESTS OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL; SUCH AS THE CONSTRUCTION OF DOMESTIC EDIFICES; FURNITURE; CARRIAGES, AND INSTRUMENTS OF DOMESTIC USE. BY T. WEBSTER AND MRS. PARKES. EDITED BY D.M. REESE, A.M., M.D. ILLUSTRATED WITH NEARLY ONE THOUSAND ENGRAVINGS. Collates as [front pastedown], [title/copyright leaf], ix-xxiv, [25], 26-1238, [rear flyleaf], [rear free endpaper], [rear pastedown]. Hardcover: H 23.25cm x L 15cm. Original leather spine chipped and worn with surface losses; inelegant but effective (probably early 20th century) repair of black cloth boards and strips of off-white cloth glued down lengthwise along both front and rear joints overlapping boards and spine and obscuring large portion of spine's black title label and its gilt lettering; boards well rubbed with worn corners. All edges marbled but with fading and spots of surface abrasion. Strips of off-white cloth glued lengthwise along both hinges; a few stress points to text block but otherwise binding is firm. First leaf present is title/copyright so missing a ffep and perhaps a flyleaf or two; Roman pagination immediately jumps to pages ix-x for "Preface by the American Editor" but with no interlaying stubs indicative of missing leaves (for pages iii-viii); Preface on pages xi-xiv; Contents on pages xv-xxiv. Innumerable late 19th and early 20th century newspaper clippings as well as several handwritten notes sometimes laid-in but mostly tipped-in (the latter often affixed at margins but a few adhered over text) causing some associated toning to leaves - the most interesting items being: {#1} handwritten recipe for corn beer on small paper slip tipped-in at page 600; {#2} short sheet tipped-in at page 797 with handwritten recipes for Tomato Catsup on recto and Tomato Pickles on verso; {#3 and #4} tipped-in between pages 912-913 are two undated but circa 1870s imprints of "Charles Winkley, Printer, Jackson, Miss." being a toned blank contract for "right to make and use Maxwell's Patent . . . and J.W. Davenport's Balm Preserving Process" plus four page brochure "U.S. Patent. Directions for Preserving Fruits, Vegetables, and Meats" by J.W. Davenport, M.D. Varied foxing throughout. Pencil notes found on pages 1225 and throughout Index (pages 1227-1238) plus faded antiquarian ink writing at top margin of page 1229; possibly some handwritten notes on text pages but none readily apparent upon a quick perusal. AN ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF DOMESTIC ECONOMY was first published in London in 1844 with subsequent British editions in 1847, 1852, and 1861; evidently the book was more popular in the United States as American editions were issued in 1845, 1847, 1848, 1849, and this 1855. Please note that this thick book has an approximate shipping weight of 4 pounds (1.81 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
